Overview of Activities at United Technologies Research Center: From Building Automation to Autonomous Helicopters

Biography
Isaac Cohen, Ph.D., is director of the Systems Department at United Technologies Research Center (UTRC). As such, he leads the development of expertise in dynamical systems and optimization controls, embedded systems, power electronics, and machine intelligence for decision support. He also serves as director of UTRC Ireland, responsible for developing a unique portfolio of research projects for energy management, security systems and aerospace in collaboration with European industry and academic partners. Current technology responsibilities include cyber physical systems, model based design, advanced controls, prognostics and health management, big data and machine learning, cyber physical security, and next-generation power electronics.

Cohen joined UTRC in June 2010 from Honeywell Labs in Minneapolis, where he led a research group focusing on video surveillance, biometrics and cyber security. Prior to Honeywell, he was an active participant in the academic field of computer vision and video surveillance for more than 15 years. During that time, he held academic positions at the University of Southern California – Computer Science Department and the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique (INRIA), France.

A member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Cohen holds numerous patents (22 patent awards and applications), primarily in the areas of surveillance, biometrics and computer vision, and has more than 100 publications in peer reviewed conferences and journals to his credit.

Cohen received his master’s degree (1989) and Ph.D. (1992) in applied mathematics from the University of Paris – Dauphine, France.
